First blog of the year

Spring is here, the birds are singing and the snow drops bulbs are pushing their way up through the frozen soil here at Tippet Farm self-catering in Cowpe.  The resident badger has dug up our newly planted daffodil bulbs so they are in pots now.  I’m not best pleased!

The local bird population seem to have survived the harsh winter.  Long-tailed tits, bull finches, blue tits, robins, green finches and gold finches can be regularly seen from the dining room window of the self-catering cottage.  It’s a bird watchers paradise.  A buzzard has been seen soaring high above clearing up carrion in the near-by farmer’s field.  We have even seen peregrines this year.

Visitors to Rossendale at Easter should definitely take some time out to see the colourful Britannia Coconutters who folk-dance their way through the streets of Bacup.  With their blackened faces, turban-like hats, red and white kilts and shining black Lancashire clogs, they are a sight to behold.  http://www.coconutters.co.uk/

Our Boer goat kids are due late May 2010 and we’ve only one nanny pregnant this year, hopefully she’ll produce enough milk for us to make our award winning goats cheese.  Visitors to the farm can arrange for a cheese making demonstration and learn how to make cheese in their kitchens at home.

Keen walkers should make a diary note that the Rural Rossendale Walking Festival takes place 1st-4th October 2010.  There are 6 foodie walks over 4 days taking in the best of Rossendale's unique working environment and tasty food from local food producers.  Walks must be pre-booked visit www.ruralrossendale.co.uk for more information
